Over the summer I had one of the moments when I felt like I was winning as a parent. We had been talking about taking the short drive up to Plains to see Jimmy Carter teach Sunday school at Maranatha Baptist Church for a while. We gave my son the choice of a trip to see the Carter or a week at a camp. He chose Carter. My history heart was happy.
We drove to Americus, Georgia early Saturday morning and spent the day at Andersonville National Historic Site and then at the Jimmy Carter National Historic Site. We ate peanut butter ice cream, went antiquing, and visited his campaign headquarters at the Plains Train Depot. We learned about his childhood at his boyhood home. We bought tons of peanuts and ate greasy southern fried food. The next morning we woke up at 4:30am to get to the church early. We ended up being number 17 in line and spent a total of 6 hours at the church. Carter was funny and insightful. He kept us all memorized. It was exhausting, but worth it.
Happy 92nd Birthday President Jimmy Carter.
